Piotr Buchwald graduated from the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice, Faculty of Mining and Geology, and completed postgraduate studies in mining aerology and mine rescue at the Silesian University of Technology and the AGH University of Science and Technology in Cracow. In 2002, he received a doctorate in technical sciences in mining aerology and safety. In addition, he graduated from the School of Managers at the Polish Foundation for Promotion of Human Resources, with a specialization in managing mines and commercial companies under conditions of mining industry restructuring, as well as a course in the United States in general safety and anti-crisis management.

He began his professional career at the Andalusia coal mine, He worked there for 16 years, from the position of super-miner to chief ventilation engineer. Throughout his 21-year career, he was associated with mine rescue. From 1997 to 2006, he worked at the Central Mine Rescue Station S.A. in Bytom, in the position of emergency manager of the chief engineer, then director of the District Mine Rescue Station in Zabrze. In 2006, he was appointed President of the Higher Mining Authority in Katowice, a position he held until 2008. Since 2004, he has been a lecturer at the Exploitation Institute of the Mining Aerology Department of the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice. He is certified as an expert witness in mining and geology by the District Court in Katowice. He is a member of the Mining Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences and other scientific and industry committees. Until 2010, he chaired the Polish Organizing Committee of the World Mining Congresses. In 2008, he chaired the Government Mission to investigate by Polish specialists the causes of the mining disaster that occurred at the Zasiadka coal mine in Ukraine, where 101 miners, including mine rescuers, died. In February 2016, he was appointed to the Mining Council, where he was entrusted with the position of Vice Chairman of the Council and at the same time Head of the Mining Council’s Underground Mining Team. The Mining Council is a consultative and advisory body to the Minister of the Environment in the field of mining and geology. He is the author of more than sixty articles and papers published and presented at numerous scientific conferences. Since 2016, he has served as President of the Board of Directors of the Central Mine Rescue Station S.A. He was appointed to the Mining Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
